Ponds everywhere
Dozens of small tanks and ponds sit between the houses and are drawn as crisp shapes on the poster. They give the blocks an irregular, almost lacelike texture that you find across the Bengal delta.

Kortið
Jaynagar and Majilpur grew up side by side in the South 24 Parganas district and have shared one municipality since the nineteenth century. Seen from above, the joined towns have no single centre. Narrow lanes branch off and meet again, houses cluster along them, and many small ponds sit among the blocks. This is the typical layout of the lower Bengal delta, where people always dug their water close to home.
The land here is almost completely flat, only a few metres above sea level, and the Sundarbans lie further south. The suburban railway from Kolkata passes through the town and carries on south, and it is the only firm straight line on the map. Around it the streets soon loosen into field edges, lines of trees and scattered hamlets that fade out into the delta.
Outside Bengal the name is known mainly for one thing: the moa of Jaynagar, a winter sweet made of puffed rice bound with date-palm jaggery, which has a geographical indication. A Jaynagar Majilpur map poster shows the quieter side of that fame, the ponds, lanes and railway that shape daily life in a delta town.

The suburban line from Kolkata runs clean and straight through the curving lanes. It is the only ruler-straight element in a street plan that otherwise grew on its own.
Two historic settlements join into one continuous street network. The old boundary between them doesn't show on the map, but it lives on in the town's double name.
