Kortið
Jhunjhunūn sits in the semi-arid north of Rajasthan, the administrative centre of a district that forms part of the Shekhawati region. From above, the older core reads as a dense knot of narrow, irregular lanes, with blocks of courtyard houses packed closely together. Around it, newer roads run straighter and wider, and the built area thins quickly into flat, sandy farmland broken by scattered villages.
Shekhawati is known for its painted havelis, merchant mansions whose walls were covered in frescoes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and Jhunjhunūn keeps a share of them. The town is also known for the Rani Sati temple, which draws pilgrims from across the country. None of this shows on a map directly, but the close grain of the old quarter hints at the merchant town it once was.
A Jhunjhunūn map poster reduces all of this to line and space: the crowded centre, the roads that leave it toward neighbouring towns, and the pale, open ground that surrounds everything. In black and white, the contrast between a dense core and an empty plain becomes the whole composition, which suits a place defined as much by its landscape as by its streets.
The historic centre is a tangle of short, bending streets and small blocks, a pattern typical of Shekhawati merchant towns and very different from the planned grids of newer Indian cities.
Main roads leave the town in several directions toward other Shekhawati towns, drawing clear radiating lines across the otherwise sparse, open terrain of the district.
The built-up area ends abruptly, giving way to wide fields and sandy ground, so the town appears on the map as a single dense island in open space.
