Jindřichův Hradec is in South Bohemia, on the Nežárka River, and its map is shaped by water. The Vajgar pond lies right next to the historic centre, a broad sheet of water with the castle rising above its shore. The old town climbs away from it, a dense cluster of streets around the main square, surrounded by traces of old walls and gates.
The castle and chateau complex is one of the largest in the Czech Republic. It combines Gothic, Renaissance and later buildings around several courtyards, and its outline is easy to recognise from above.
