Kibuye, the main town of Karongi District, lies on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu in Rwanda's Western Province. The lake gives the town an extraordinary outline: the shore here breaks into narrow peninsulas and sheltered bays, with small islands scattered offshore. Behind the water, steep hills rise quickly, and the town's roads wind between the lake and the slopes.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and around Kibuye the description feels literal. Slopes are cultivated high up their sides, and roads follow ridges before curving down to the shore.
