Kyshtym lies on the eastern slopes of the Southern Urals in Chelyabinsk Oblast, in a landscape of lakes, forest and low ridges. The town grew around eighteenth-century ironworks and the ponds dammed to power them. On the map its streets curve along the water, and in wider views larger lakes such as Sugomak and Irtyash appear nearby.
The ironworks era left a manor house, often called the White House, which still stands in the centre. Internationally, the town's name is also attached to the 1957 Kyshtym disaster at the Mayak nuclear facility. Mayak lay some distance away in a closed city, and the accident took Kyshtym's name because it was the nearest town on public maps.
