La Baule-Escoublac lies on the Atlantic coast of Loire-Atlantique, along a wide bay that runs for roughly nine kilometres between Le Pouliguen and Pornichet. From above, the most striking feature is the smooth curve of the beach. Behind it runs a straight line of seafront buildings, and behind those comes a softer, irregular fabric of streets laid out through pine woodland.
The resort largely grew in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Pines were planted to hold the shifting dunes, and the old village of Escoublac was eventually abandoned to the sand and rebuilt further inland. That history is still visible in the plan: the older settlement sits back from the shore, while the resort districts spread along the coast in a looser pattern.
