Laguna de Duero lies just south of Valladolid in Castile and León, close to the Duero River. The town takes its name from a small lagoon on its edge, which is surrounded by pine woodland. On a map, this lagoon and the green area around it are the most distinctive features, set against the streets of the town.
Laguna grew considerably as Valladolid expanded, and its layout shows this. There is a small older centre, and around it are newer residential districts, with blocks of flats, housing estates and wide roads. Toward the edges, the pine forests of the region's sandy soils frame the town on several sides.
