Lichfield is a small cathedral city in Staffordshire, and its map shows a medieval street grid south of a pair of linked pools. Minster Pool and Stowe Pool lie just north of the centre, and beyond them stands the cathedral in its own close, the only medieval English cathedral with three spires.
The centre keeps its old layout of streets laid out in a loose grid around a market square. Samuel Johnson, the author of the famous dictionary, was born here, and his birthplace faces the market. Erasmus Darwin also lived in the city, in a house beside the cathedral close. Beyond the old core, ring roads and newer estates spread outward.
