Lippstadt sits on the Lippe River in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, and the river shapes its old town more than almost anything else. Branches of the Lippe and old defensive channels wrap around the historic centre, so on the map the core appears as an island of streets surrounded by water, with small bridges connecting it to the districts outside.
The town was founded in 1185 by Bernhard II of Lippe, one of the earliest planned town foundations in Westphalia. Its old centre keeps a compact, irregular medieval pattern, with the Marienkirche at its heart and the ruins of the Stiftskirche nearby. Beyond the water ring, newer districts, a ring road and industrial areas extend across the flat Westphalian plain.
