Llanquihue sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Llanquihue, one of the largest lakes in Chile, in the Los Lagos Region. On the map, a wide pale expanse of lake fills much of the frame, and the town lies along its curved shore. The Maullín River leaves the lake here and winds west toward the Pacific, adding a thin line to the composition.
The town was shaped by German settlers who came to the lake area in the nineteenth century, and its orderly streets reflect that. Farmland and patches of forest surround it, with Puerto Varas a short distance along the shore. On a clear day, the Osorno volcano can be seen across the water, though the map shows only the lake between them.
