Marktoberdorf is the seat of the Ostallgäu district in Bavarian Swabia, set in the rolling pastureland of the Allgäu with the Alps visible to the south. The map shows a compact centre on a rise, where the main streets meet, and newer districts spreading across gentler ground below. Farmland, small woods and scattered villages fill the surroundings.
At the top of the old town stand the Baroque parish church of St. Martin and a former summer palace of the prince-bishops of Augsburg. Together they give the centre a clear focal point.
