Mechernich lies in the northern Eifel, in the Euskirchen district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The municipality covers a wide area, and on the map the town itself is only one cluster among many villages set in rolling farmland and forest. Roads twist over the hills to link them, and the terrain gives each settlement its own irregular footprint.
For centuries the town was known for lead mining around the Mechernich Bleiberg, one of the larger lead deposits in Europe, and traces of that industry remain in the landscape. In the village of Kommern, the LVR open-air museum gathers historic rural buildings from across the Rhineland in a large site of lanes, fields and farmhouses.
