Middleborough is one of the largest Massachusetts towns by land area, and on a map that size is what you notice first. A compact downtown sits around its central crossroads, and from there roads run out across a wide, low landscape of woods, wetlands and farmland. Interstate 495 and Route 44 cut across the town in long, clean strokes, crossing the older, winding roads that grew up between farms and villages.
Water shapes much of the drawing. The Nemasket River winds through town on its way north toward the Taunton River, and to the south the town reaches into the chain of large ponds around Assawompset, the largest natural freshwater body in the state. Cranberry bogs appear as neat, geometric patches among the irregular woodland, one of the more distinctive features of this part of southeastern Massachusetts.
The town's history adds a small footnote. Lavinia Warren, the performer who married Charles Stratton, known as General Tom Thumb, was born here, and the couple later kept a home in town.
