Moanda, also written Muanda, sits on the short stretch of Atlantic coast that belongs to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, just north of the Congo River's mouth. On a map the town lies along a straight sandy shoreline, with a modest network of streets behind it and, to the south, the maze of creeks and mangrove islands of the river estuary.
The country's coastline here is only around forty kilometres long, and Moanda is its main beach town. The nearby Mangroves Marine Park protects the estuary's wetlands, home to manatees and nesting sea turtles, while offshore oil fields form an important part of the local economy. The port of Banana stands at the tip of the coast to the south.
