Nagahama lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Biwa, in Shiga Prefecture. On a map, the lake stretches to the west, and the town sits on flat land between the shore and the hills. The historic centre has a compact pattern of narrow streets, and a lakeside park marks the site of the castle.
The municipal area is large and reaches north along the lake, with fields, villages and mountains inland. Chikubu Island, a small forested island in the lake, belongs to Nagahama and appears as a distinct shape offshore, giving the composition an unusual accent.
Nagahama Castle was Toyotomi Hideyoshi's first castle, and the present keep is a modern reconstruction. The old centre is known for Kurokabe Square, a district of black-walled merchant buildings, and for the Hikiyama festival with its float performances.
