Seen from above, Neapoli is part of the continuous urban fabric of Thessaloniki. It sits on the rising ground northwest of the historic centre, where the city starts to climb away from the Thermaic Gulf. Its streets are short and closely spaced, and the blocks are small. The map is almost entirely built up, with few open spaces.
The neighbourhood grew quickly in the twentieth century as Thessaloniki expanded beyond its old walls. Today it shares a municipality with neighbouring Sykies. On paper the boundary between the two hardly shows. One compact street pattern flows into the next, and the only sense of where one district ends is the way the slope bends the grid.
