Pécs lies in south-western Hungary at the foot of the Mecsek hills, and the map shows a city shaped by that slope. The historic centre sits on rising ground, compact and irregular, with the cathedral and its squares near its northern edge. The city stretches mostly east and west along the base of the hills, while the Mecsek itself fills the north of the frame with woodland and winding roads.
The city's history runs deep. Its early Christian necropolis, dating from Roman Sopianae, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The former mosque of Pasha Qasim, now a church, still dominates Széchenyi Square. Pécs was home to Hungary's first university, founded in 1367, gave its name to Zsolnay porcelain, and was a European Capital of Culture in 2010.
