Potchefstroom was founded in 1838 by Voortrekkers and is regarded as the oldest town in what was once the Transvaal. It later served as the first capital of the South African Republic before the seat of government moved to Pretoria. On a map, that origin still shows in the long, straight streets of the centre, set out in a disciplined grid.

The main campus of North-West University occupies a large area close to the centre, bringing lawns, sports fields and residences into the street pattern.
