Safi sits on Morocco's Atlantic shore, roughly halfway between El Jadida and Essaouira. Seen from above, the coast here has a very firm edge: the land ends in a line of low cliffs, broken only where the port pushes its breakwaters into the ocean. Behind that line, the old medina forms a dense, irregular knot of lanes. Its walls still read clearly as a boundary against the newer districts.
The Portuguese held Safi in the early sixteenth century and left two landmarks that shape the map. Ksar el Bahr, the sea castle, sits right on the rocks at the water's edge. A larger fortified enclosure rises on higher ground above the medina. Between the two, the old town slopes down toward the sea, and its alleys get narrower as they approach the shore.
Beyond the walls, the city spreads inland in wider, more regular blocks, and the potters' quarter lies just outside the medina gate. Safi has long been known for its glazed ceramics and its sardine fishery, and both leave a mark on the map: kiln workshops on one side, docks along the harbour on the other. Potters' Hill
Just outside the old walls, the potters' quarter climbs a slope dotted with workshops and kilns. It is the source of the glazed ceramics Safi has been known for over centuries.
Harbour breakwaters
Long jetties curve out from the coast to shelter the fishing and industrial port. This is the only place where the otherwise straight line of cliffs has been reshaped by people.
