Samsø lies in the Kattegat, roughly midway between Jutland and Zealand, and from above it looks like an hourglass. A broad southern body of farmland meets a narrow isthmus, then widens again into a compact, higher northern end. On the east side the shore opens into Stavns Fjord, a shallow inlet scattered with small islets. The western coast runs long and fairly straight toward the ferry landings.
The road network is rural and sparse. A spine road runs north to south, lanes branch off to small villages, and field boundaries give the southern half a patchwork texture. Tranebjerg sits near the centre and Nordby clusters at the top of the island. The harbours on each coast show up as short breakwaters. The island is widely known for its energy transition. In the early 2000s it became a reference case for community-owned wind power and renewable heating. Much older is the Kanhave Canal, a Viking-age channel dug across the narrow waist so that ships could pass between the fjord and the open sea. Across Denmark, Samsø is also known for its early new potatoes, which reach shops at the start of each summer.

The narrow waist
Midway up the island the land narrows sharply. This is where the Kanhave Canal was cut in the Viking age, and it gives the whole outline its hourglass silhouette.
Northern hills
The top of the island rises into a rounded, hillier landscape around Nordby, where roads bend and loop instead of running straight across open farmland.
