San Timoteo lies in Zulia state in north-western Venezuela, on the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo. On a map the lake dominates as a vast, featureless expanse to the west, and the town extends along the shore in a band of streets and blocks. The land behind it is low and flat, so the roads run long and fairly straight.
This stretch of shoreline belongs to the Costa Oriental del Lago, the eastern lake coast long associated with Venezuela's oil industry.
