Stanford-le-Hope lies in Thurrock, a short distance inland from the Thames estuary. The town's streets cluster around the railway line and the old village centre, spreading outward into mid-century housing estates. South of the built-up area, the map changes character entirely, giving way to low marshland, creeks and the wide water of the river as it approaches the sea.
The name is thought to refer to a stony ford, with the 'Hope' taken from the stretch of the Thames nearby.
