Straelen lies in the Kleve district of North Rhine-Westphalia, close to the Dutch border near Venlo. The town centre is compact and well defined, with a market square and a small network of streets around it. Beyond that the map changes character completely, opening into flat land divided into fields, nurseries and large glasshouses that reach almost to the border.
Horticulture is central to the town's identity. Straelen is one of Germany's major centres for growing vegetables and ornamental plants, and a large flower and plant auction operates here. From above, the rectangular footprints of the greenhouses create a geometric pattern of blocks and service roads that is unusual on a town map and very graphic in black and white.
