Kortið
Swanscombe sits on the south bank of the Thames in north Kent, between Greenhithe and Northfleet. From above, the town is a close grid of terraces and closes on higher ground. To the north, the land flattens into the Swanscombe Peninsula, a broad tongue of marsh pushed out into a wide bend of the river. The contrast between built streets and open, drained land gives the map a clear two-part structure.
Chalk shaped this place, and it shows in the plan. Former quarry pits cut deep, flat-floored hollows into the surrounding land, and newer housing and roads have been laid inside and around them. Swanscombe is best known for the Swanscombe skull, fragments of an early human found in gravel at Barnfield Pit in the 1930s, now one of the oldest hominin finds in Britain. The site is a nature reserve today.
A Swanscombe map poster shows the town at the meeting point of estuary and chalk. The riverbank runs as one long, confident line along the top. Below it, marsh drainage channels, railway tracks and the curving streets of the old village lock together. Printed in black and white, the quarry edges read almost like contour lines. They record a landscape that industry reshaped and then gradually returned to people and wildlife.
A broad lobe of marshland pushes into a bend of the Thames north of the town, crossed by thin drainage lines and edged by the river's long sweep.
Large quarried hollows around the town appear as sharp-edged voids in the street pattern, with later roads and housing arranged along their floors and rims.
The gravel pit where the Swanscombe skull fragments were found is now a heritage site and nature reserve, a quiet green patch within the town's streets.

Hví Swanscombe
People who grew up between the Thames marshes and the chalk pits know how unusual this corner of Kent looks from above. A map of Swanscombe keeps that shape on the wall: the river, the peninsula and the streets that climb away from the water.
