Świnoujście is Poland's westernmost port town, built on several islands where the Świna strait flows from the Szczecin Lagoon into the Baltic Sea. The main town centre and the seaside resort are on the island of Usedom, which Poland shares with Germany. The port and industrial areas lie across the water on Wolin. On a map, water is everywhere.
The resort district faces a wide sandy beach and a long promenade that continues across the border into the German resorts of Usedom. For decades, ferries were the main road link between the islands, until a tunnel under the Świna opened in 2023. The town's lighthouse, near the harbour entrance, is the tallest in Poland.
