Sycamore is the county seat of DeKalb County in northern Illinois, set in the flat, intensively farmed prairie west of Chicago. Its map shows a classic Midwestern plan. Straight streets meet at right angles, a main street runs through the historic downtown, and the courthouse stands at the centre. A branch of the Kishwaukee River curves through the town, one of the few things that breaks the grid.
The downtown along State Street is protected as a historic district, with nineteenth-century commercial buildings around the county courthouse. Around it, residential streets fill a regular grid of blocks, and newer subdivisions at the edges add curving roads and cul-de-sacs. Beyond the town limits the prairie returns in wide rectangles of cropland, divided by roads laid out on the survey grid.
A Sycamore map poster also recalls a well-known local tradition. Each October the courthouse lawn fills with carved pumpkins for the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, which dates back to the early 1960s. On the map, the courthouse is the calm centre of the picture, with streets and river spreading outward toward the open farmland.

A branch of the Kishwaukee River winds through Sycamore with parkland along its banks. It is a soft curve across otherwise straight Midwestern streets.
