The Hague stretches from its historic centre northwest to the North Sea, and the map reads like a transition from dense town to open coast. Around the Binnenhof and the rectangular Hofvijver pond the streets are tight and irregular, then long avenues lead outward through villa districts, parks and wooded dunes to the seaside resort of Scheveningen.
Water appears everywhere in smaller forms. Remnants of the old canal ring, the grachten, circle parts of the centre, and further canals run through the newer neighbourhoods.
