Tochigi Map Poster & Print

Tochigi city is not the prefectural capital, though it once held that role, and its map shows a town with an older commercial heart. The Uzuma River runs through the centre, and in the Edo period it carried boats loaded with goods toward the capital. That trade built rows of storehouses along the water, and the town is now often called Little Edo.

From above, the old centre is a tight cluster of streets hugging the river's course, with the rail lines passing just to one side. Beyond it the city widens across farmland and suburbs. To the south lies the Watarase retarding basin, a vast wetland of reeds and water, and to the west the land rises toward Mount Ōhira and forested ridges.

A Tochigi map poster brings these parts together: a fine river-town grain in the middle, open marsh to the south and empty hillsides to the west. The wetland is one of the most striking shapes in the region, a broad smooth area bordered by embankments, and it gives the composition a strong, quiet anchor at the bottom of the frame.

01

Uzuma River

The narrow river winds through the old centre, lined by the storehouse district that earned the town its Little Edo nickname, and sets the direction of the historic streets.

02

Watarase wetlands

The large retarding basin to the south appears as a wide open area of reed beds and water, one of the biggest wetlands in the Kantō region.

03

Western hills

Toward Mount Ōhira the street network gives way to contour-following roads and forest, a clear edge between the plain and the uplands.
