UCLA fills a long, tilted piece of Westwood on the west side of Los Angeles. Sunset Boulevard curves along its northern edge and the gridded streets of Westwood Village run down toward Wilshire Boulevard to the south. The campus follows the terrain, with a marked drop between the older core and the athletic fields, crossed by the broad flight of the Janss Steps.
The university moved to this site in 1929, a decade after its founding, and its first buildings, Royce Hall and Powell Library, face each other across a brick-paved quad in a Romanesque style. The north end of campus holds the sculpture garden and the arts and humanities, the south end the sciences and the medical centre, while residence halls climb the hill to the west.
A UCLA map poster shows the campus as a distinct piece of the city: bounded by long boulevards and residential hills, and open to the Westwood Village street grid on its southern side. Its curving internal roads and the contrast between the dense medical buildings and the open fields make for a map with real variety.
