Vereshchagino grew up around a station on the railway across Perm Krai, and the map still shows it. The main line cuts through the town, with sidings and yards spreading out beside it. Residential blocks and older wooden-house streets sit on either side in a loose grid. Past the last houses the pattern gives way to fields, dark patches of forest and the thin lines of country roads.
The town is named after the painter Vasily Vereshchagin, known for his battle scenes, who died in 1904. The railway made the town and still shapes it. On the map the line is the clear spine that everything else lines up with: crossings and bridges over the tracks connect the two halves, and the station area is the densest part of the network.
A Vereshchagino map poster shows a pattern common to towns in the Urals foothills. Housing sits on both sides of the tracks. A few crossing points stitch the halves together, and they show up as narrow links between two separate street networks.
