Wanqiao is a town in Dali, in western Yunnan, on the narrow strip of plain between the Cangshan mountains and Erhai Lake. That setting determines its map. The land runs in a long band from north to south, with mountain slopes rising steeply on one side and the lake shore on the other. Villages, fields and roads fill the space in between.
This part of the Dali plain is historically home to the Bai people, and village clusters are spread across the farmland rather than concentrated in a single dense centre. Main roads run parallel to the lake, and smaller lanes and irrigation channels run down from the mountains toward the water, creating a loose cross-hatched pattern.
