Worms is one of the oldest cities in Germany, set on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate. On the map the river runs broad and gently curving along the eastern side, and the Nibelungen Bridge carries traffic across to Hesse. The historic core sits a short distance back from the water, and its tight, irregular street pattern stands apart from the wider grids that grew around it.
The Romanesque cathedral of St Peter stands at the centre, and its footprint is visible even at street scale. In 1521 the Diet of Worms heard Martin Luther refuse to recant, and that episode made the city's name known across Europe. Worms is also one of the three ShUM cities, whose medieval Jewish sites became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, and much of the Nibelungenlied is set here.

Nibelungen Bridge
The bridge to the Hessian bank is a strong horizontal on the sheet, leading the eye from the old town straight across the Rhine. Its tower gate on the Worms side is one of the city's best-known sights.
Cathedral quarter
The Romanesque cathedral dominates the historic core. The dense, uneven lanes around it trace the outline of the medieval town that came before the modern city.
