Yambol lies on the Tundzha River in the Upper Thracian lowland, and the river shapes the whole town. From above, the water swings through in wide curves, with wooded parkland along its banks and on islands in the channel. The centre sits close to the river, and newer residential districts spread outward on flat ground in a looser grid of blocks and boulevards.
Yambol's centre keeps a sixteenth-century covered market, the Bezisten, one of the few buildings of its kind left in Bulgaria, as well as the Eski Mosque from the Ottoman period. Just outside town are the remains of Kabile, an ancient Thracian settlement later used by the Macedonians and Romans, now an archaeological reserve on the plain north of the modern town.
