Zakynthos is the southernmost of the main Ionian Islands, off the western Peloponnese. Its map divides neatly in two. The western side is a limestone upland that drops into the sea as tall white cliffs, with only a few coves cut into it. The eastern side is a low, farmed plain, with villages strung along country roads that run down to the island's main town on the east coast.
The capital, also called Zakynthos, faces the mainland across a long harbour. It was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, and its waterfront squares honour the poet Dionysios Solomos, who was born here and whose Hymn to Liberty became the Greek national anthem. Venetian rule left the island its old nickname, Fior di Levante, the flower of the East.
In the south, the broad curve of Laganas Bay is one of the most important nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean, and it is protected as a national marine park. Near Cape Skinari, at the island's northern tip, the sea has worn caves into the limestone. The coastline here turns ragged and folded, unlike the smooth sandy arcs of the south.
