Alang Map Poster & Print
Alang is a town on the western shore of the Gulf of Khambhat in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. It is known worldwide for its ship-breaking yards, often described as among the largest in the world. On a map, the coast is divided into a long series of narrow plots along the beach, where decommissioned ships are run aground and dismantled.
The site works because of the gulf's very high tidal range and gently sloping shore: at high tide, ships can be driven far up the beach, and at low tide they sit exposed on the sand. Inland, the town, workers' housing and scrap yards spread along a few roads leading away from the coast.
An Alang map poster is one of the more unusual prints you can hang. A straight coastline, repeated plots running down to the water, a sparse network of roads and then the open sea. The rhythm of the plots is striking in black and white, and the gulf gives the drawing a strong, empty edge.

Tidal shore
The Gulf of Khambhat's large tides and flat beach make it possible to run ships aground here, and the wide intertidal zone shapes the coastline.
Inland roads
A few roads lead back from the yards through scrap areas and housing, forming a sparse network behind the busy coastal strip.

Pourquoi Alang
Une carte qui a du sens
Alang interests people who work in shipping, maritime history or recycling, and those who have followed the story of how ocean-going vessels end their lives. The map is stark and memorable.
Add your own title, perhaps the name of a ship or a date in the subtitle, and the coordinates line. Blueprint and Noir suit the industrial coast. HD files are $9, with no watermark.
