Star-shaped singel
The canal around the old town follows the line of vanished bastions. This leaves a zigzag outline that stands out sharply on the poster.

Alkmaar Map Poster & Print
Alkmaar is in North Holland, a short distance inland from the North Sea dunes. Its most striking feature on a map is the old town. The singel canal that follows the line of the old bastions still traces a jagged, star-like outline around the centre, and inside it narrow canals and streets fill a tight grid.
The Noordhollandsch Kanaal runs past the historic core and links the town to the waterways of the province. Outside the ring, later neighbourhoods spread in more regular blocks, crossed by drainage channels typical of reclaimed polder land. The contrast between the dense medieval centre and the open polders gives an Alkmaar map poster clear structure.
The town is known for its traditional cheese market, held on summer Fridays in front of the Waag, the old weigh house. Carriers still bring cheese wheels across the square on wooden barrows. Alkmaar is also remembered for its 1573 siege, when it held out against Spanish forces. That siege is recalled in the Dutch saying that victory began at Alkmaar.

Inner canals
Inside the ring, narrow canals such as the Oudegracht and the Luttik Oudorp run alongside the streets. They add fine double lines to the dense centre.
North Holland Canal
This large canal passes the historic core and runs on through the polders. It gives the map a long, steady waterway that contrasts with the compact town.
