Old wall ring
The historic centre is enclosed by a loop of streets following the former fortifications, so the medieval core reads as a dense, rounded island inside the later town.

Arnstadt Map Poster & Print
Arnstadt is often counted among the oldest towns in Thuringia, with a first written mention in 704. On the map that age shows in the tight, irregular old town, where lanes converge on the market square and the course of the former walls still traces a rough ring. The Gera runs along the western side of the centre before heading north through the valley toward Erfurt.
Beyond that ring the pattern loosens into nineteenth-century blocks, railway lines and later housing estates spreading over gentle slopes. To the south the streets thin out quickly as wooded hills begin, the first folds of the Thuringian Forest. The contrast between the dense centre and the open, contoured land around it gives the drawing a clear focal point and plenty of calm space at the edges.
The town is also closely tied to Johann Sebastian Bach, who took his first post as organist here in 1703 at the church that now carries his name. An Arnstadt map poster keeps that setting in view: a small residence town on a river, drawn in fine black lines, with the old centre sitting at the heart of the network like a knot.

The Gera valley
The river Gera passes along the western edge of the old town, its banks lined with gardens and green strips that give the map a soft, winding counterline to the streets.
Forest to the south
South of the centre the street grid gives way to wooded slopes, where roads follow the contours and open space marks the beginning of the Thuringian Forest.

Pourquoi Arnstadt
Une carte qui a du sens
Arnstadt suits people with a connection to Thuringia, to organ music or to small German towns whose plan has kept its basic shape for centuries. The poster works as a quiet reminder of a place grown up in, studied in or visited on a trip through the Bach towns.
You can set your own title and subtitle, add a date or keep the coordinates line, and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. The HD files cost $9 for six print sizes, or you can order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
