Aserrí lies just south of San José, where the Central Valley starts to rise into the hills, and the map shows it. Near the church and the central park there is a compact grid in the Spanish colonial pattern. Away from that core, the streets give up on right angles and follow the ridges, curving along contour lines and dropping into ravines. The town looks as though it was poured over uneven ground.
The best-known feature is the Piedra de Aserrí, a huge rock on the slopes above the town that is tied to local legends, including the story of the witch Zárate. Around it and beyond it, the map runs into coffee farms, patches of forest and scattered houses along winding roads. The linework becomes sparse and loose there, which makes the dense centre stand out.
An Aserrí map poster shows a town that sits between the city and the mountains. At the northern edge of the frame the streets join the continuous urban fabric of greater San José, while to the south the roads thin into lines climbing into the hills. It's a real edge-of-the-valley map, with most of its character coming from the shape of the land.

The slopes above town lead to the Piedra de Aserrí, and the thinning roads in that direction show clearly where the settled valley meets the hills.
