Bagé stands in the Campanha region of Rio Grande do Sul, on the rolling grasslands of the pampa near the border with Uruguay. On the map, the town is a clear grid of square blocks set down in wide, open country. The regular pattern of streets is broken only by small creeks and by the rail line and highways leading out toward the plains.
The centre is built around plazas in the Iberian tradition, and the blocks around it are even and generous. At the outskirts the grid thins out, and the landscape beyond is almost empty, with the long straight lines of roads and field boundaries crossing the grassland toward ranches and neighbouring towns.
