Balykshi Map Poster & Print
Balykshi sits just outside the city of Atyrau in western Kazakhstan, in the flat lowland that surrounds the northern shore of the Caspian Sea. The land here is almost perfectly level, and this shows clearly on a map: streets extend in long, straight lines, blocks are laid out in regular rectangles, and little interrupts the pattern except water and infrastructure.
The name comes from the Kazakh word for fisherman, a reminder of the settlement's links to the fishing traditions of the Ural delta and the Caspian. Channels and wetlands near the river add softer, irregular lines to the otherwise orderly layout. A Balykshi map poster captures that meeting of straight streets and meandering water in a single frame.
Today Balykshi functions closely with Atyrau, a centre of Kazakhstan's oil and gas industry, and the two built-up areas sometimes seem to merge on the map. The wide horizon of the steppe and the low, open ground toward the sea give the surroundings a spare character, which translates well into a minimal black-and-white print.

Ural delta waters
Channels and marshy ground associated with the Ural River and its approach to the Caspian introduce irregular curves along the edges of the settled area.
Edge of Atyrau
Balykshi sits right beside Atyrau, so a wider framing shows how the two built-up areas approach each other across the open lowland.

Pourquoi Balykshi
Une carte qui a du sens
For people from Balykshi or Atyrau, especially those who have moved to other parts of Kazakhstan or abroad, this is a way to keep the shape of home in view. The contrast between the orderly streets and the wide, empty land around them is quietly striking.
