River valley axis
The Bârlad River and its floodplain run alongside the town. They set the orientation of the whole map and leave an open strip where fields and meadows take the place of streets.

Bârlad Map Poster & Print
Bârlad is in Vaslui County in eastern Romania, in the valley of the river that shares its name. From above, the town runs lengthwise beside the water, with flat floodplain on one side and streets climbing gradually onto higher ground on the other. Roads and the railway follow the valley, so the whole town has a clear, elongated direction.
It is one of the older market towns of Moldavia. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it became known as a cultural centre, with a respected secondary school and active literary circles. The Vasile Pârvan Museum, named after the archaeologist who studied in the town, holds collections of archaeology, history and art.
A Bârlad map poster shows how closely the town follows its river. The central streets form a denser area near the old market, residential quarters spread along the slopes, and the river corridor runs through the composition as an open, gently winding band. The map is restrained and easy to read, and it suits black ink on a pale sheet.

Central district
Near the historic centre, streets tighten into smaller blocks around the main civic buildings and churches, and around the school that once gave the town its reputation for learning.
Rising edges
Away from the river, residential streets climb onto higher ground. Their curves follow the terrain, so the outer districts have a looser, more organic pattern than the core.
