Dock basins
The large rectangular docks built for coal exports are the most geometric shapes on the map, with hard edges set against the soft curves of the coast.

Barry Map Poster & Print
Barry is a town in the Vale of Glamorgan, on the Bristol Channel south-west of Cardiff. Its coastline is complex. Large rectangular dock basins sit between the town and Barry Island, which is now joined to the mainland. Beyond the docks, the island curves around the sandy beach of Whitmore Bay, and the town's terraced streets climb the slopes behind.
The docks were built in the late nineteenth century to export coal from the South Wales valleys and, for a time, they were among the busiest in the world for coal. Barry Island later became a popular seaside resort. In recent years, the town has become widely recognised as the setting for the television comedy Gavin and Stacey.
A Barry map poster shows all of this together. The straight edges of the dock basins, the rounded bays of the island and the dense terraces behind them make a strong composition. The sea stays clean and open. It is an image of industry and leisure side by side, the two stories that shaped the town.

Barry Island
Once a true island, now linked to the town, it curves around Whitmore Bay. Its beach and promenade form a clear, rounded outline.
Terraced slopes
Rows of terraced houses climb the ground above the docks. Their close parallel streets create a strong rhythm across the town.
