Beloretsk sits in the Southern Urals, in a valley on the upper Belaya river in Bashkortostan. Its origins are industrial. An ironworks was founded here in 1762, and like many Ural factory towns it was built around a dammed pond that powered the works. On the map that pond is still the centre of gravity, with streets arranged around its shores.
Forested ridges enclose the town on several sides, so the built-up area stretches along the valley and the river rather than spreading in a circle. The metallurgical plant remains a large block in the townscape. Beloretsk has long been known for steel wire and cable production, and railways and roads squeeze through the same narrow valley.
