Geba River estuary
The broad tidal estuary wraps around the city's southern and eastern edges, giving the poster a large open field of water against which the dense harbour streets stand out sharply.

Bissau Map Poster & Print
Bissau sits on the north bank of the Geba River estuary, where the water widens toward the Atlantic and the tides reach far inland. On a map the city looks like a peninsula of streets. The old port and the small colonial core sit at the water's edge, and newer neighbourhoods spread north and west across flat land broken by mangrove creeks.
The historic quarter near the harbour, known as Bissau Velho, has short, tight blocks laid out under Portuguese rule. The Fortaleza de São José da Amura stands close by, a star-shaped outline that shows up clearly even at poster scale. From there a main avenue runs inland toward the newer districts, and the grid slowly loosens into irregular residential lanes.
Bissau became the colonial capital in 1941, replacing Bolama, and has been the capital of independent Guinea-Bissau since the 1970s. The Pidjiguiti docks are remembered for the 1959 strike and massacre, a key moment in the independence movement. A Bissau map poster shows a small capital shaped by its estuary, with the shoreline doing as much drawing as the streets.

Amura fortress
The angular, bastioned outline of the old Portuguese fortress near the waterfront is one of the few geometric shapes in the city and catches the eye straight away.
Mangrove edges
Creeks and mangrove-lined inlets cut into the city's edges, so the coastline looks frayed and organic rather than smooth, and the built-up area breaks apart at the margins.

Pourquoi Bissau
Une carte qui a du sens
For people from Guinea-Bissau, and for anyone who has worked or travelled there, this map holds the harbour, the old quarter and the road inland in one quiet frame. It suits a home office or hallway, a steady reminder of a city many visitors only ever see briefly.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a year or a family name, and the coordinates line, then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint and Sand work especially well with the large expanse of estuary water.
