Bistrița sits in northeastern Transylvania, where the river of the same name leaves the hills for a wider valley. Transylvanian Saxons founded it under the name Nösen, and it grew into a fortified trading town. On a map the medieval core is easy to find: a compact oval of streets around the central square, with the Evangelical church standing in the middle of it.
The church's Gothic tower is one of the tallest church towers in Romania, and the arcaded Sugălete houses line one side of the square. Readers of Bram Stoker know the town as Bistritz, where Jonathan Harker stays at the Golden Krone before travelling on toward the Borgo Pass. Beyond the old centre, housing estates and industrial areas spread out along the valley.

The main road east climbs toward the Tihuța pass, the Borgo Pass of Stoker's novel, and the Carpathians. On a wider map it leaves the town as one long line.
