Boisar lies in Palghar district in Maharashtra, north of Mumbai, on the Western Railway line that connects the region's towns to the city. On a map the railway is the town's backbone: a straight line running roughly north to south, with streets gathering densely around the station and then loosening into residential lanes and open land further out.
West of the town is the Tarapur industrial area, a large estate of factories laid out on a regular plan of wide roads and rectangular plots. Beyond it, on the coast, stands the Tarapur Atomic Power Station, which began operating in 1969 as India's first commercial nuclear power plant, placing a small town at the centre of an important chapter in the country's industry.
Between the industrial estate and the sea are villages, creeks and farmland, so the map moves from an orderly factory grid to a looser rural texture within a few kilometres.
