Irregular coastline
Bays, inlets and mangrove edges break up Bontang's shoreline, with small islands offshore, giving the map a detailed, ragged boundary along the Makassar Strait.

La carte
Bontang Map Poster & Print
Bontang lies on the eastern coast of Borneo in East Kalimantan, only a short distance north of the equator. Its map is shaped by the shoreline, which is broken by bays, mangroves and small offshore islands, and by the large industrial sites that occupy much of the coastal land. The residential city spreads inland from the water, with forest and hills beyond.
The city grew around energy and industry. It is home to a major liquefied natural gas plant and a large fertiliser complex, both built on the coast, and much of its planned housing was laid out for the workers of these sites. Kutai National Park, a large area of lowland rainforest, lies to the north of the city.
A Bontang map poster shows a city with two faces. The industrial complexes form large, geometric shapes along the shore, the neighbourhoods fill the land behind them, and the coastline with its inlets and islands draws an irregular edge. The contrast between built grid and ragged coast makes for a striking composition.

Industrial complexes
The LNG and fertiliser plants occupy large coastal sites, appearing as broad geometric blocks with internal roads that contrast with the residential streets.
Stilt settlements
Parts of Bontang's coastal communities are built over the water on stilts, linked by walkways that extend the street pattern out beyond the shoreline.

Pourquoi Bontang
Une carte qui a du sens
Bontang is a place where many families arrived for work and stayed, and a map of the city by the sea can mark that chapter. The mix of industry, coast and forest also makes it a distinctive piece to hang.
