Brajarajnagar lies in the Jharsuguda district of western Odisha, close to the Ib River and within the Ib Valley coalfield. The town grew around industry rather than an old market centre, and its map reflects that: residential colonies arranged in orderly blocks, main roads linking them, and large industrial sites that interrupt the street pattern with broad open spaces.
For decades the town was known for the Orient Paper Mills, one of the largest paper factories in India, whose sprawling site and worker housing shaped much of the town's layout. Coal mining in the surrounding area adds opencast pits and access roads, which appear on the map as irregular clearings in the landscape.
Around the settlement, the land is gently rolling, with farmland, patches of forest and water bodies between the industrial zones. The railway passes through, linking the town to Jharsuguda.
