From above, the town is shaped as much by water as by roads. The Branford River winds inland through salt marsh, and neighbourhoods such as Short Beach, Indian Neck and Stony Creek cluster along the jagged coastline.
Off Stony Creek lie the Thimble Islands, a group of small rocky islands, many with a single house, that appear on the map as a scatter of dots in the Sound.
