Brenham is the county seat of Washington County, set in the rolling farmland between Austin and Houston. The map centres on the historic downtown and its courthouse square. Around it, a compact grid of blocks gives way to streets that curve and fan out over the surrounding hills. US Highway 290 passes the town, and it draws a strong line against the gentler pattern of residential roads.
The town is best known as the home of Blue Bell Creameries, which has made ice cream here since the early twentieth century. It is also home to Blinn College, founded in 1883. Nearby lies Washington-on-the-Brazos, where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in 1836. That is why the county calls itself the birthplace of Texas.
